BMW Unveils the 2024 X2: Fresh Styling, Enhanced Space, and Advanced Technologies
The long-anticipated second generation of the BMW X2 has been officially revealed, and it’s set to arrive at U.S. dealerships in March 2024. The 2024 X2 boasts a contemporary design, two available powertrains, and a suite of advanced technologies. This new crossover will make its global public debut at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, commencing on October 26.
The X2’s design features a sleek and seamless roofline that merges into the rear, creating a distinctive coupe-like silhouette, a characteristic we’ve seen in spy photos. With its upright front end, flared wheel arches, and robust rear, the X2 exudes a sense of confidence and maturity, setting it apart from its predecessor. The model-specific headlights, updated rear lights, and optional illuminated BMW kidney grille all contribute to the X2’s unique identity. Notably, the new X2 is the first compact BMW to offer optional 21-inch wheels.
The vehicle’s body panels are characterized by clean surfaces with minimal dynamic lines, and the door handles are seamlessly integrated into the body. The slender side window area features a modern interpretation of the Hofmeister kink, enhancing the X2’s elegant profile. Shallow roof rails in black high gloss are also available as an option. In terms of dimensions, the X2 has grown by 7.6 inches in length, measuring 179.8 inches, and its wheelbase is 0.9 inches longer than the previous model.
Inside the cabin, the X2 offers more space compared to the previous generation. Rear seat kneeroom has increased by an inch, and the cargo area can accommodate up to 25.3 cubic feet of cargo with all five seats in use. Folding down the second row of seats provides a maximum storage capacity of 51.7 cubic feet.
The interior of the X2 places a strong emphasis on touch and voice control, facilitated by the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, powered by the new BMW iDrive 9. The curved center display comprises a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch infotainment display, seamlessly integrated behind curved glass. The QuickSelect tool allows for easy activation of specific functions, and a tap on the home icon brings users back to the home screen. Additionally, a cabin-facing camera has been added, allowing for photos and video recording.
In the engine department, the U.S. market will receive two powertrains for the X2. The base option is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the X2 xDrive28i, delivering 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, enabling the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds. Opt for the X2 M35i xDrive, and you’ll enjoy a more potent 2.0-liter unit with 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The M35i model features enhancements for improved performance, including a stronger crankshaft and an optimized oil supply for the pistons. An M-specific exhaust system adds a distinctive growl to the driving experience. It’s worth noting that the X2 M35i xDrive is slightly detuned to 296 hp in Europe due to emissions regulations.
Both X2 models come exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission featuring electric actuation, a wider gear ratio spread, and enhanced internal efficiency. The transmission automatically shifts into Park when the engine is turned off, and an electric parking brake is applied automatically on slopes. Furthermore, the gearbox incorporates a mechanical limited-slip differential for maximum traction and handling stability.
Production of the new BMW X2 will take place at the company’s Regensburg plant.
