Those who eagerly anticipated the “STI” badge in the new WRX’s name might have to hold their breath a bit longer because the new WRX doesn’t come with a more potent STI variant—for now. The WRX TR: A Nostalgic Nod
For many, the “TR” designation on a Subaru might seem unfamiliar. However, for those who remember the days of the Subaru Impreza TR, also known as the “Tuner Ready” model from 2006 and 2007, it’s a blast from the past. Back then, the TR was an Impreza housing the zestier WRX 2.5-liter turbocharged engine but stripped of extra features like the CD changer, sport seats, fog lights, aero enhancements, and the signature rear wing. The concept behind it was to deliver WRX performance at a more accessible price point by omitting components that tuners would typically replace.
The 2024 Subaru WRX TR takes a distinct approach. Since it starts with the turbocharged WRX as its foundation, there’s no higher-powered model to source an engine from, as there’s no model above the WRX in Subaru’s performance lineup. Consequently, the same 271-hp 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine found in the 2023 WRX continues to power the WRX TR. As is customary for Subaru, power is distributed to all four wheels through the brand’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system, and a manual transmission remains an option.
Enhancements in Handling and Weight Reduction
Subaru’s focus on the WRX TR centers on refining its cornering capabilities. Firstly, the WRX TR receives a Brembo brake package, featuring six-piston calipers at the front and two-piston calipers at the rear. The rotors and brake master cylinder have been upsized as well. These brakes are concealed behind exclusive 19-inch wheels wrapped with 245/35 Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires to enhance grip.
Handling benefits from stiffer springs and revised dampers, while the steering rack has undergone retuning to sharpen steering response. To shed some weight, the power moonroof has been omitted in the TR trim.
Continuity in Infotainment and Driver Assistance Technology
In contrast to the original Impreza TR, where sport seats were swapped for basic ones, the new WRX TR opts for an upgrade. It boasts black and grey Recaro seats upholstered in Ultrasuede. The infotainment system remains unchanged, featuring an 11.6-inch touchscreen responsible for managing media, climate control, and configuration settings. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continue as standard features.
In 2024, every manual-transmission-equipped WRX will come equipped with the EyeSight suite of active driver-assist features as standard—a move mirroring Subaru’s approach with the BRZ, as seen with the tS model earlier in the year. EyeSight encompasses Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking System, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. While these features are not uncommon with manual transmissions in overseas markets, they are a rarity in the United States, where most automakers do not typically adapt them for use with manual gearboxes.
Subaru has yet to disclose pricing for the WRX TR. Considering the automaker’s description of it as a “top-tier” trim, the hope for a budget-friendly option, akin to the original TR, may need to be reevaluated. The price tag will certainly play a crucial role in consumers’ decisions, as they weigh the option of the WRX TR against the prospect of a future STI model.
