Google is currently in the testing phase of a new Chrome feature designed to provide users with essential usage statistics. The aim is to prevent the browser from consuming excessive RAM, as reported by Windows Central.
This novel feature offers a convenient way for users to access quick RAM usage details by simply hovering their mouse pointer over a specific tab. This makes it significantly easier to identify and close resource-intensive tabs that are no longer needed.
Users who have the latest beta version of Chrome Canary installed can expect to see these usage details appear when they hover over a tab. Previously, users had to delve into the Chrome Task Manager to find out how much memory each tab was using.
In addition to the RAM usage details, this feature will also notify users when Chrome’s Memory Saver function freezes a tab to conserve memory, particularly if that tab has been inactive for an extended period of time.
To enable this feature, users can navigate to Chrome://flags, search for the “Show memory usage in hovercards” option, and then activate it through the dropdown menu. A quick browser restart may be necessary to ensure the feature functions properly.
The resource-intensive nature of Google’s Chrome browser, especially when dealing with multiple open tabs, has been a persistent concern for users. To address this, Google introduced Memory and Energy Saver modes in a Chrome update that was rolled out in February 2023.
These modes are geared towards assisting users in freeing up RAM and minimizing the strain on their device’s battery life. According to Google, the Memory Saver feature can reduce RAM usage by as much as 30%. This proves to be especially beneficial when running resource-intensive applications like video editing or gaming, as any inactive tabs will be automatically reloaded when needed.
The Energy Saver mode, on the other hand, works by limiting background activities in Chrome. This includes measures such as restricting video frame rates and removing animation effects when a device’s battery falls below 20%. Users also have the option to configure it to activate when the laptop is running on battery power, providing an extra layer of energy efficiency.
