NASA’s Aims For X-59 Experimental Aircraft’s First Flight In 2024

NASA’s Quesst mission has postponed the inaugural flight of its groundbreaking X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft to 2024. The X-59, an exceptional experimental aircraft, has posed significant engineering challenges for NASA researchers collaborating with prime contractor Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. Beyond its unique design, the X-59 integrates cutting-edge technology with systems and components sourced from established aircraft, including its landing gear from an F-16 and a life-support system adapted from an F-15.

The development of this distinctive aircraft has presented various technical challenges, prompting the Quesst team to reschedule its maiden flight, which was originally slated for 2023. This information will be shared with U.S. and international regulatory bodies to potentially revise rules that currently prohibit commercial supersonic flights over land.
