Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) Takes a Visual Leap with AI-Generated Images
On October 12, 2023, Google unveiled a captivating expansion to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), offering a fresh dimension to the way users interact with its search platform. This initiative marks a significant stride in the tech giant’s vision for the future of Google Search, where artificial intelligence (AI) plays a central role in delivering responses to user queries, transforming traditional search results into an innovative generative experience.
The latest update in this ongoing transformation introduces a groundbreaking capability for SGE users to generate images directly from the Google Search bar. This addition to the SGE program replaces generative text with AI-generated images, ushering in a new era of creativity and exploration.
Google has coined this enhanced feature as a step forward in offering users an immersive and interactive search experience, stating, “Beginning today, we’re introducing the ability to create images with our generative AI-powered Search experience.”
To illustrate the power of this feature, Google presented an example of someone seeking to craft a birthday card for a friend whose favorite animal is a Capybara. By entering the text prompt, “draw a picture of a Capybara wearing a chef’s hat and cooking breakfast,” SGE responds by presenting four AI-generated images.
Each of these generated images provides a glimpse into its style and context, offering insights such as, “A photorealistic image of a Capybara wearing a chef’s hat and cooking breakfast in a forest, grilling bacon.” Users can then further customize and modify these generated images, with the option to export them to Google Drive or download them for their creative projects.
Moreover, Google has extended the generative image AI to Google Images, enhancing the visual search experience. For instance, a user can now search for “spooky dog house ideas” for a Halloween-themed dog house, and Google Images will generate a corresponding image based on the user’s description.
What makes this innovation even more exciting is the potential to merge Google’s generative image AI with Google Lens, creating an avenue for users to discover real-world products that closely match their textual descriptions. This synergy between visual search and generative AI is expected to elevate the overall search experience to new heights.
That access to this transformative generative AI feature is currently limited to users who have enrolled in Google Labs and opted into the SGE program. Additionally, this feature is initially available only to users in the United States, with plans for potential expansion in the future. Google’s commitment to enhancing the search experience through AI-driven innovations is set to shape the future of information retrieval and creative expression.
